GeNext@AGR samples work by nine young Saskatchewan artists who are all recent BFA or MFA graduates. While it would be tempting and predictable to suggest that this work of is the outcome of 'a sense of place' or 'community' or even the consequence of earlier directions that Saskatchewan art has taken, there is little reason to do so. Indeed, this work refuses simple linkages. Instead, it finds its location in larger pan-global issues and directions being taken in the most current art. As such, it reveals how we are all attempting to find footing in the new world of the new millennium. If there is a coherence evident in this show, it is discoherence. This speaks beyond a unified confining style to unique, individual views of issues and urgencies about art and the way we live with each other. Crossing several borders from the cultural to the geographic, the 'handmade' to the technologically driven and the philosophical to the emotional, there is much wry humor to be found in this inquisitive work - which buries beneath its mostly elegant but sometimes anarchic skin a sense of personal anxiety and social confusion. -- Jack Anderson, Guest Curator |
